Internship Achievements

During my four-month tenure, my internship focused on a broad array of tasks, including:

  1. Data Collection:
I had the opportunity to gather extensive data regarding the last 10 years’ Medicaid enrollment and expenditure, which is crucial in building a strong foundation for future predictions.
  2. Team Collaboration:
To facilitate online team collaboration, I developed my skills using Linux and Github, understanding their applications and increasing my proficiency.
  3. Healthcare Knowledge:
I gained a broad understanding of various aspects of US healthcare insurance, particularly Medicaid and Medicare. This also included insights into common fraud schemes, helping to underline the importance of rigorous data analysis and monitoring.
  4. Algorithmic Knowledge:
My technical skillset was greatly enhanced through the study of various algorithms. I learned about the time series forecasting models such as the Prophet model, and problem-solving methods associated with the traveling politician problem and the bucket problem.
  5. Time Series Forecasting:
A major part of my internship involved examining Medicaid enrollment and expenditure. Using a decade’s worth of data, I implemented time series methods to predict the next ten years’ trends. This was particularly valuable in applying my Python programming skills and proficiency with the Prophet model to perform predictions on annual and monthly data for both US and California.

I first cleaned the raw data and split it into training and test sets. Then, I trained the Prophet model with the training set and made predictions on both the training and test sets, and calculated the scores for model-related accuracy and performance. After that, I redesigned the model using the complete dataset and used it to predict the data for the next ten years.

Conclusion

The internship at EMRTS has been an enriching and enlightening experience. I was able to apply my academic knowledge to real-world situations and, in turn, refine my skills and deepen my understanding in a professional setting. I am grateful for the experience and look forward to
leveraging the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to further my career in the tech industry.
