Introduction
When I started my internship at EMR Technical Solutions (EMRTS), I expected to work mainly with healthcare-related data and technical tasks. What I did not expect was how calm, structured, and supportive the working environment would be from the beginning. Mr. Counts created an encouraging atmosphere that made it easier to ask questions, learn at a steady
pace, and focus on understanding the systems without feeling overwhelmed.
Throughout the internship, I worked on real technical problems rather than academic exercises. This experience helped me better understand how software systems are designed, how data is stored and searched, and how technical decisions directly affect usability and performance.
Project Experience and Learning
One of my main tasks was building a claim viewer application that processes healthcare claim data in JSON format. I worked on uploading JSON files, storing them in a database, and extracting only specific fields needed for searching, such as patient, payer, provider, and claim number. I also implemented search functionality that retrieves matching claims from the database and displays the results as a list, instead of showing only a single record. This helped me understand how backend logic, database structure, and user interface work together to create a usable application.
Through this process, I learned the importance of database design, clean data handling, and separating raw data storage from search logic. These concepts helped me think more systematically about backend development and data-driven applications.
Skills and Professional Growth
This internship strengthened my technical skills in Elixir, Phoenix, PostgreSQL, and working with JSON data. More importantly, it helped me improve how I approach problem-solving. I learned to break problems into smaller steps, test ideas incrementally, and remain patient when something did not work immediately.
Communication was also a key part of my growth. I became more confident explaining my thought process, asking clarifying questions, and discussing technical decisions. The calm and supportive guidance from Mr. Counts played an important role in this growth, as his approach helped create an environment focused on learning, clarity, and steady progress rather than pressure.
Reflection and Conclusion
Overall, this internship helped me gain confidence in my technical abilities and better understand how real-world software projects are built. I developed a clearer picture of how backend systems, databases, and user-facing features connect, and I learned to take
ownership of my work while continuing to learn from feedback.
I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of EMRTS and for the guidance and support provided throughout the internship. This experience helped me grow both technically and
professionally and gave me greater clarity about my future direction in software and data-focused roles.
