Internship Reveiw
This internship gave me a great opportunity to work with real data and learn about the healthcare domain. I have been inspired to look more into healthcare analytics and other adjacent roles. This internship gave me the opportunity to learn and practice different skills like python/django, SQL, Git/GitHub, and database design while giving us an understanding of the medical world, especially claims, Medicare and Medicaid.
Valuable Aspects
All the learning tools given helped me create a stronger foundation and broaden my understanding of coding and database design. Even when the lectures were review, they offered new explanations of the topics to help my understanding of those topics. I am grateful for the different books and files for different topics that we received as well, and I will be referencing them later.
The most valuable part of the internship was the hands-on experience of working through projects, similar to how it might be at our future jobs: project discussion, task delegation, GitHub collaboration, updating for feedback, and working towards a complete release. These projects are also valuable, as they can be shown on our GitHub to showcase the skills we worked on. I would say the practice with GitHub and working with databases will be what most directly supports my job prospects in the future.
Complaints
I do not have any big issues or complaints with the internship in general. I do wish the projects on the PowerPoint slides were a little more detailed with what the requirements were for what they should look like and what the goals of the projects were. I also think the internship could incorporate Tableau or Power BI, especially for those that want to work more on the Data Analytics/Science side, opposed to the computer science side.
Summary
Overall, I had a great experience and would recommend this internship to anyone looking for similar experience.
